Emotions ran high today at the Grad Student Council meeting as the issue of funding was disscussed. The Grad Student Council, which serves as the grad students voice here at the Arkansas State campus, currently recieves no funding from the administraiton. The could change, however. Interim Chancellor Dan Howard is offering them 14% of Student Action fund money and that isn’t sitting well with some members.
“Well, I don’t have a problem supporting if you think something is better than nothing,” says GSC member Mark Randall, “My concern is that is a token, not enough to accomplish anything.” He says it feels like the administration is “throwing a bone” to shut the GSC up.
The proposed funding could increase if the Graduate enrollment went up as well as decrease if Graduate enrollment decreases. Two years ago, the GSC recieved a one-time $10,000 dollar offer from then-Chancellar Robert Potts. The GSC turned down the offer.
GSC President Didi McCann says the offer made by Dr. Howard is legit and will be permanate. “If we accept this funding at this point and time, it will be the Grad Student councils”
The GSC decided to postpone the offical vote on the subject to next weeks meeting. This will give them time to inform and educate all graduate students on the matter and get their opinions on the issue.

“All we see is a PowerPoint and fat ladies singing opera.”
“There’s no content at all.”
“If I want to listen to a radio station, I’ll tune into on the radio, not a TV channel.”
Those are phrases often said by students here at Arkansas State University when someone asked them about ASU TV. In the past, they had a point. ASU TV was nothing but the “Calendar of Events” simulcasting KASU and airing the Classic Arts Showcase. With the exception of football and basketball games, there was no content. That has changed. Tune in to ASU TV now and you will see cultural, entertaining programs produced here in our studios and from other sources.
It all started with a nearly new staff tired of the complaints and lack of programs on ASU TV. From their frustration came Campus Cuisine, Red Wolf Roundtable, What the Howl!?!., Red Wolf Reviews, A-State Date, Cultural Perspectives, ASU Essentials, and The Breakdown. ASU TV News (formerly A-State News, and Jonesboro PM) is now four days a week. They don’t plan to stop there. Many of the shows will be back this fall in HD and new shows will be produced and added to the program line-up.
ASU-TV is moving ahead. With our transition into HD, we are planning on increasing our in-house programming. But, that isn’t enough to program a station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have partnered with non-profit television networks and are beginning to carry their programs. Tune-in to ASU TV and you’ll see programs by Deutsche-Welle TV and Link TV. From news programs like European Journal, Global 3000, Earth Focus to entertainment programs like World Music, Rapper, Divas, Virtuosos, the look and feel of ASU TV is changing and we are leaving the realm of public access.
We encourage you to get on board and check ASU TV out. Our newly revamped website contains all of the programs we air on our Video on Demand page. If you have any questions about our shows or want to help in anyway, feel free to e-mail us at info@asutv.com
